¿Por Qué Español? : Why Spanish?

La verdad es que mi mamá habla español, pero mi papá y mis hermanos y yo no podemos. Aunque aprendí varias frases en español cuando era joven, como “¡Apaga la luz!” y varias palabras, como la palabra para cebolla o lechuga, nunca aprendí a hablarlo en realidad. Porque mi papá no habló español, no lo oímos mucho en la casa. La oportunidad de aprenderlo simplemente no existía. Cuando el tiempo para aprender un idioma en la escuela secundaria llegó, el decisión era fácil: sería español. (Todavía recuerdo mi primer maestro de español, Señor Ramírez.) Pero ahora, la razón es este: quiero terminar lo que empecé.

The truth is that my mother speaks Spanish, but my father and my brothers and I don’t. Although I learned various phrases in Spanish when I was young, like, “Turn off the light!” and various words, like the word for onion or lettuce, I never really learned to speak it. Because my father didn’t speak Spanish, we didn’t hear it much in the house. The opportunity to learn it simply didn’t exist. When the time for me to learn a language in high school arrived, the decision was easy: it would be Spanish. (I still remember my first Spanish teacher, Mr. Ramírez.) But now the reason is this: I want to finish what I started.
