I’ve started to think that learning Spanish is not a small battle, but a long war with many small battles to win. You can’t learn everything in Spanish in one day or in one month or even in one year and this can be frustrating because we want to know everything right now. But, we should remember that we didn’t know everything about English right away either. With much use of English, we become competent in the language. So, each time I speak Spanish, each time I read something in Spanish, and each time I write these passages, I know that I’m learning something new. It’s not just one effort, it’s your cumulative practice that will win the war.

What the woman told me made me think. I’m not sure which is the best way to learn, and I’m not a language expert, but it seems to me that her attitude was a major problem. She thinks that Spanish is painful and, therefore, very difficult and probably impossible. Who can learn with these thoughts? I didn’t want to speak to her more because I didn’t want to think negative thoughts and it didn’t seem that she had anything good to say about Spanish. Since then, “It’s not difficult, it’s different” has become my mantra. If I believe that I can’t do it, like that woman, then I expect that I won’t.
Ella me
estar aprendiendolo mal.

This is what I’m telling myself. It’s very easy to say that
Spanish is too difficult to learn, but I don’t believe that’s true. It’s simply
that Spanish isn’t the same as English and we should expect that the words,
phrases, and grammar should be the same. I think that when you understand that,
it’ll be much easier. After one meetup group, I ran into a woman in the
bathroom. She asked me if I were a native Spanish speaker. I responded no, that
I was learning, and she said that she had been learning Spanish for fifty year
and that it gave her a headache. I nodded and smiled and left the bathroom,
thinking that if it had taken so much time, she had been learning it wrong.

It’s a common thought among English-only speakers that English is easy to learn. However, when you start to learn a new language, you suddenly realize how strange English is. Maybe you wonder why one word – to wait/wish/hope – means three different things. (You also wonder how to translate that Dusty Springfield song.) But remember that in English we have many words that mean different things and, also, sound alike but aren’t spelled alike. For example, meat isn’t the same as meet and read isn’t the same as red. Also, we have words that are written the same but don’t sound the same, like tear (from the eye) and tear (to rip). It can be very confusing, can’t it?
empecé a estudiar español
otra vez, él y yo hemos tenido muchas

A friend of mind studied French when he was in
college. Since I began to study Spanish again, he and I have had many
conversations about language learning. We both agree that a big problem with learning
a new language is that, much of the time, we don’t speak English with correct
grammar. And, even though we may implicitly know the correct rules, we can’t
identify them if someone were to ask us. For example, do you know what the
present perfect is? Or the pluperfect? Or the progressive tense? I didn’t know
them either until I started studying a foreign language. My friend had the same
experience.

Listening to music is good way to learn a language and I’m lucky because I already know many artists that make good music in Spanish. In my first quarter of Spanish in college, my teacher introduced us to Shakira. At that time, the singer was not who we think of now (this was pre-“Hips Don’t Lie”) and her music was completely different. “Ciega Sordomuda” was the first song we listened to. To practice my Spanish, I’ll work through the lyrics below.
Ciega, Sordomuda
Blind, Deaf, & Dumb
Acabar means to finish, to use up, and the se is reflexive, so the first two lines would be “My argument and methodology finishes itself.” Cada vez is “every time,” se aparace is “it appears,” with the “it” referring to tu anatomia, and frente a mi being “in front of me,” making the next two lines, “Every time your anatomy appears in front of me.” So, our first four lines mean something along the lines of, “Every time your anatomy appears in front of me, every argument ends itself.”
Our first two lines are “Because this love doesn’t understand advice or reason.” Alimentarse means to feed or live on and pretextos is, as you might guess, pretexts or, more aptly, excuses, so our next two lines are, “It feeds on excuses and it’s lacking pants.” All together we get, “Because this love doesn’t understand advice or reason, it feeds on excuses and it’s lacking pants.” If you had any doubt as to the propriety of Shakira’s use of the word anatomia above, now you have your answer.
Here we have “This love doesn’t permit me to be on foot.” In our third line we have ha quebrado, which means “has broken.” Los talones is “heels,” so put together we get “This love doesn’t permit me to stand on my own two feet because it has already broken my heels.”
The first line here is “And although I pick myself up, I return to fall (or fall back down).” Acercarse is to come closer and útil is useful, which makes inútil useless, so our next two lines are “If you come closer nothing is useful, for this useless [thing is implied].” So, in all, we have “And although I pick myself back up, I fall back down. Nothing is useful if you come closer, for this useless person/being/thing.”
coro/chorus:
Stupid, blind, deaf, and dumb
Dim, ruined, stubborn,
Is all I’ve been,
For you I’ve changed myself,
Into something that does nothing,
Another thing that loves you more,
I think about you day and night,
And I don’t know how to forget you.
Enterrarte means “to bury you,” so the first two lines are, “How many times have I tried to bury you in my memory.” And next is, “Although I say ‘no more’ already, it’s the same story all over again.”
Our first two lines are, “Because this love always knows to make me breathe deeply.” Then we have, “It brings me to the left and in a fight with the world.”
As I’ve said before, the subjunctive is notoriously difficult for English speakers to understand, but here it’s really quite simple.
First line: “If could exorcise myself from your voice,”
Second line: “If I could escape from your name,”
Third line: “If I could rip out my heart,”
Last line: “And hide myself, to feel nothing, anew.”
All the subjunctive is expressing here is the possibility of something occurring. That’s not so scary, is it? (This is what I’m telling myself.)

A big advantage of this meetup group is that you can get practice that you can’t get elsewhere. Doing exercises from a book is very different from actually speaking the language. When speaking, you need to think much faster, you need to find the correct words, you need to know what tense you’re speaking in, and you need to conjugate verbs in your mind. Essentially, you need to think on your feet. You can’t do this in a book. The other major advantage is that you can meet new people and with these people you can practice your Spanish. I’ve been going for six weeks and have had a great time each time.
