Hablando con R. : Speaking with R.

Un amigo mío estudió francés cuando estaba en la universidad. Desde que empecé a estudiar español otra vez, él y yo hemos tenido muchas conversaciones sobre el aprendizaje de idiomas. Ambos estamos de acuerdo que un gran problema con aprendizaje un nuevo idioma es que, mucho del tiempo, no hablamaos inglés con gramática correcta. Y, aunque sabemos implícitamente las reglas correctas, no podemos identificarlos si una persona nos pregunte. Por ejemplo, ¿sabes lo que es el presente perfecto es? ¿O el pluscuamperfecto? ¿O el tiempo progresivo? No los supe tampoco, hasta que empecé a estudiar un idioma extraño. Mi amigo tenía la misma experiencia.

A friend of mind studied French when he was in college. Since I began to study Spanish again, he and I have had many conversations about language learning. We both agree that a big problem with learning a new language is that, much of the time, we don’t speak English with correct grammar. And, even though we may implicitly know the correct rules, we can’t identify them if someone were to ask us. For example, do you know what the present perfect is? Or the pluperfect? Or the progressive tense? I didn’t know them either until I started studying a foreign language. My friend had the same experience.
